Bold disruption at a local EV charging site: balaclava-clad vandals target cables with a power tool, and the consequences are costly.
Two men wearing balaclavas were filmed using what appears to be a power tool to sever cables at a Tap Zap Go EV charging station on the Medway City Estate in Strood. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Friday, February 20, and resulted in more than £2,000 in damage.
CCTV captures the attackers approaching the site, cutting the cables of two charging units, and then fleeing. Tap Zap Go, which opened the estate site in June last year, says the damage renders the chargers inoperable while replacement cables are procured and installed.
The company estimates about £2,500 will be needed to replace all cables, plus additional labor costs to restore full operation. In addition, it expects a weekly revenue loss of around £2,500 while the station is out of service.
Tap Zap Go is actively working to fix the situation as quickly as possible.
Marketing manager Lauren Nelson noted a surge of inquiries from loyal customers via social media and the company website, with many having to charge at other locations at higher prices until the cables are replaced. She expressed disappointment that a popular and affordable service for local EV drivers is temporarily unavailable, emphasizing the impact on the community and on access to low-cost charging options.
But here’s where it gets controversial: vandalism targeting critical EV infrastructure not only imposes immediate repair costs but also strains charging access during an era when green transportation relies on reliable, affordable charging networks. And this is the part most people miss—the broader ripple effects on local drivers who depend on convenient charging for daily commutes and errands.
What are your thoughts on how communities should deter such crimes and protect essential green-energy infrastructure? Do you think penalties should be tougher, or should there be greater collaboration between operators and law enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future?
