In a shocking turn of events, a snow leopard attacked a tourist at a ski resort in China's Xinjiang region, prompting serious concerns about safety measures in such popular destinations. This incident, which took place on January 23 at the Keketuohai Scenic Area in Altay prefecture—a well-known winter getaway—has raised eyebrows due to its rarity.
Following the attack, local authorities swiftly escalated security protocols, enhancing public safety measures and increasing emergency patrols throughout the area to ensure that visitors feel secure.
A video that circulated widely across Chinese social media platforms captures the moment: it starts with the snow leopard casually roaming an open snowfield. The scene then shifts dramatically as the animal approaches a person lying on the ground. Subsequent clips show onlookers carrying away the injured individual, who is seen shielding her face while her clothing and helmet are visibly stained with blood.
Reports from local news outlets reveal that the victim was a female tourist who had spotted the leopard from a distance and attempted to capture its image. Unfortunately, as she ventured within approximately ten feet of the majestic creature, the leopard lunged at her, biting her face and bringing her down.
Thankfully, a nearby ski instructor sprang into action, successfully scaring off the leopard, allowing the woman to be transported to a local hospital for medical care.
While initial reports indicated that she suffered serious facial injuries, Hangzhou Daily later reported that her condition is stable, which is a relief given the circumstances.
In response to this alarming event, officials in Fuyun county issued a statement on the same day, announcing that they have stepped up patrols, reinforced protective barriers, and launched intensified public awareness campaigns aimed at educating visitors about safety in the vicinity of the scenic area.
