In a captivating display of architectural ingenuity, Mimosa Architects has crafted a unique rural retreat in the Czech Republic, drawing inspiration from the very elements that define its surroundings. This cabin, nestled near Prosečnice on the banks of the Sázava River, is a testament to the studio's vision of harmonious integration with nature.
The story begins with a scorched predecessor, leaving only a stone plinth as a reminder of what once was. Mimosa Architects seized this opportunity, using the existing foundation as a springboard for their design. Principal Petr Moráček explains, "We believe that such a relationship is essential for the long-term preservation of the landscape."
One of the most intriguing aspects is the cabin's exterior, clad in charred larch wood. This deliberate choice not only pays homage to the fire that preceded it but also serves a practical purpose. Charring the wood enhances its durability, and the dark facade ensures the building blends seamlessly into its natural environment.
"The river literally flows within fishing rod reach," Moráček adds, highlighting the site's unique position between the river and rocky terrain. This inspired the design concept of "rock, river, and fire," a connection that runs deep within the cabin's very essence.
The interior, a contrast to the exterior, is a light and airy space. Spruce bio-board and black steel accents create a warm and inviting atmosphere, encouraging a sense of connection between the indoors and the wild outdoors.
The downstairs area is an open-plan haven, combining the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Upstairs, smaller rooms provide a sense of intimacy, with Moráček noting, "After all, the purpose of going out of the city is to be together."
What makes this cabin truly special is its self-sufficiency. With an on-site well, basalt wool insulation, and a wastewater tank, it requires minimal external resources. The use of water-resistant sheet metal on the exterior facilitates efficient drainage, further showcasing the architects' attention to detail and sustainability.
